August 27, 2009 - Pro Star Aviation Announces Certification of Universal Avionics UNS-1Fw/-1Lw WAAS
Once again, Pro Star Aviation, a leader in avionics installation and repairs, has announced it is in the final stages of STC certification for the installation of a single Universal Avionics UNS-1Fw or UNS-1Lw WAAS capable FMS and a Universal Avionics LP/LPV Monitor in the Sikorsky S-76B and C model executive helicopter. WAAS enabled FMS allows the helicopter to fly Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV) approaches. Final certification is expected by the end of May 2009.
"We're pleased to have developed a low cost option for Sikorsky operators looking for WAAS approach solutions. This should completely change the dimension of Sikorsky S-76 flight operations in the future," stated General Manager, Kevin Harriman.
The WAAS installation includes two TSO C190 compliant GPS antennas that can be mounted on existing locations on top of the vertical stabilizer. Alternatively the antennas can be mounted on the tail rotor driveshaft cover utilizing Pro Star Aviation's new STC'd antenna mount or by modifying an existing location. The new FMS will incorporate the Universal Avionics UNS-1Fw or UNS-1Lw Navigation Computer and the LP/LPV Monitor. The installation also includes dual FMS Level Of Service indicators mounted directly in front of each crew member to display the current approach conditions and available minimums, LNAV, LNAV/VNAV, or LPV
There are currently over 7,000 WAAS capable approaches throughout the United States, 1,445 of which have published LPV procedures. The FAA is quickly moving forward to establish Helicopter WAAS approaches for Heliports specifically in the high volume New York metropolitan area.
